A sump pump gets requested a lot more often than it's actually needed. Here's how to tell which situation you're in.
What a Sump Pump Actually Does
A sump pump moves water that's already collected somewhere it shouldn't be — a basin, a low point, a crawl space — and pushes it out to a proper discharge point. It's a mechanical answer to a problem gravity alone can't solve on that particular property.
That's an important distinction: a sump pump doesn't stop water from collecting. It removes water after it's already there.
When You Actually Need One
Flat properties with no natural slope for gravity to move water away
A high water table that keeps a low area consistently wet
A basement or crawl space sitting below the level any gravity-fed pipe could reach
In these situations, nothing else solves the problem. A properly sized pump with battery backup is the right call.
When You Might Not
A sump pump is sometimes installed to patch over a grading problem that regrading — reshaping the land so water moves away on its own — would have solved for less, with nothing mechanical to maintain or eventually replace. If a property has never been properly graded, that's worth ruling out before a pump goes in.
Sizing Matters
An undersized pump runs constantly and burns out early. An oversized one short-cycles and wears down just as fast. The right pump is sized to the actual volume the basin sees during a real Central Texas downpour — not a rough guess.
